Micromon iPhone iPad Game Review

Micromon

If you familiar with Pokemon, then this game would be suitable for you! Well, I still remember I used to play Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, and Gold in Gameboy when I'm 15. Yes, I played until Pokemon Gold I tried to play Pokemon Crystal, but couldn't carry on as latter version start getting more fancy than traditional Pokemon and I'm kind of old school.

In this review, I will used some Pokemon game terms to link and to compare between Pokemon and Micromon. So if you played Pokemon before you will find those terms very familiar and easily understand. If you don't, no worries you will still understand it quite well.

Without wasting more time
, the game starts with a robot called 'B002' where it provide players a simple tutorial about this game. There is no way to skip tutorial as of current version (v1.0), if you want to start over a new game, you have to go through this tutorial again. Upon complete the tutorial, you are given a quest to look for Professor Malk. Along the game you will found out developer actually putting a lot of effort into animation like character animation, Mircomons animation, skill animation, environment animation, and etc.

In Pokemon you got to choose from 3 types of Pokemon elements as your starter Pokemon (water, fire, and leaf) while in Micromon there are 5 types of elements (normal, water, fire, wind, and mineral). Each of them looks so cute and nice to me, but we only can choose one for our journey in the game. I forgot to capture screenshot for 5 starter Mircomons, I only capture normal and mineral Micromons.

I choose water type Micromon as my starter Micromon. Then Malk will provides all other necessary stuff for you to continue in the game like a M-Linker (PokeDex, party, save/load, setting), a bag (Pokeball, Potions). Based on the game description in iTunes, there are total 130+ Micromons to catch and battle, which mean expect a huge world to explore and a lot of grinding to evolve your Micromons! (Tips: You will found some potions on the grass randomly!)

Micromon game play is almost same with Pokemon, you have quest to complete, explore, catch Micromons, grinding, wild battle, NPC battle, etc. There are some differences. For example, in Pokemon when your Pokemon is levelled up HP will be full, while in Micromon doesn't have this feature. However, when opponent Micromon die, it will drops some items. These items will recover your Micromon HP and stamina (Green things in screenshot below). Each Micromon die, it will drops some coins too (Fruits look alike things). These coins are for players to buy potions, chip (Pokeball) in merchant. I considered this Micromon drop coins is a good featured compared to Pokemon at least you get money while grinding.

So what is stamina about? Stamina in Micromon is similar with Pokemon's skill moves. For example in Pokemon, Bite have 25 moves while Solar Beam have 5 moves. While in Micromon is stamina, each skill have stamina value, low level skill will have low stamina requirement and high level skill will required more stamina. The yellow bar (below screenshot) is your Micromon's stamina value, each Micromon have different value of stamina. For example, the first skill doesn't required stamina to execute.

Oops, my Micromon almost die. Thanks to free potions on the ground after opponent Micromon die

If you want to save money and don't feel to consume potion, you can always go back to Malk's lab (Located at the beginning of the game start) for free healing service (Poke Center). When your Micromon levelled up, it will shows you base stat and levelled up stat just like Pokemon.

Yes! Levelled up

For Micromon's skill, you can go to M-Linker > Party > Skill, you will be able to see at what level your Micromon will learn new skill and you can't read the new skill description until it unlocked. Each Micromon have 4 active skills and 1 passive skills. In the screenshot below you will notice there are 3 skills and you can actually choose your top 4 active skills unlike Pokemon you need to remove skill in order to learn new skill. I considered this another good feature for Micromon!

I believed catch a Micromon and catch a Pokemon will have the same mechanism where you are required to weaken the opponent in order to successful catch them unless you are using Gold Chip (Master Ball). The game also offers few types of chip to catch Micromon, and of course the more expensive chip will have a better capture success rate just like Pokeball, Great Ball, and etc. Each battle only given 3 chances to catch Micromon unlike Pokemon allow you to use unlimited Pokeball. I'm not sure what is the reason behind this, but I don't like this feature as given that legendary Mircomons are hard to encounter and not to say have a low success rate to capture them. Maybe this is part of the game system.

Another good feature in this game is Online Arena (Required active Internet connection), which in multiplayer PVP. Your Micromons will battle will other player's Micromons. Winner will get some points and these points can be used to exchange some items like Gold Egg, Silver Egg, Coins, and etc. You will find a list of items for exchange in one of the NPC in game.
(P.S: In v1.0, there are some issues regarding connectivity, developer are looking into it - From online source)
